Jim Harbaugh Biography

After a stellar playing career, Jim Harbaugh became one of the best coaching minds in football. Harbaugh is the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers after a successful stint at his alma mater, Michigan. In six seasons, the Wolverines went 86-25 under his watch, winning three Big Ten titles and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Harbaugh is no stranger to NFL coaching success as evidenced by his four-year run with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14. The Niners reached the NFC Championship three times and played in Super Bowl XLVII. Harbaugh was the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2011.  

Harbaugh previously turned around the program at Stanford, going 12-1 with an Orange Bowl win in his final season. He also had the chance to recruit and develop future star quarterback Andrew Luck while in Palo Alto. The opportunity with The Cardinal came after he took FCS San Diego to back-to-back 11-1 seasons.  

Harbaugh started his coaching career as a quarterbacks coach with the Oakland Raiders and an unpaid assistant with his father Jack at Western Kentucky while he was still an NFL player. He had a 14-year pro playing career, was a 1995 Pro Bowler, and got inducted into the Indianapolis Colts’ Ring of Honor in 2005. Harbaugh played collegiately under Bo Schembechler and ranks as one of the greatest quarterbacks in program history.
