Jim Kaat Biography

Jim Kaat’s 25-year career in major league baseball was one of the longest in the history of the game.  Kaat played in four different decades and during the administration of seven different U.S. Presidents.  As a 16-time Gold Glove winner, he is known as one of the best defensive pitchers of all-time.  Only Greg Maddux won more Gold Gloves as a pitcher.  Kaat was a three-time All-Star and had his best season in 1966.  That year, he won 25 games, finished fifth in MVP voting, and runner-up for the Cy Young.  Towards the end of his career, he finally won a World Series ring, pitching four games out of the bullpen in the series for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982.  At his peak, he made the World Series with the Minnesota Twins in 1965 and 1967.  Following his career, he became one of the most successful baseball broadcasters in the modern era.  Kaat’s worked as a local broadcaster for the Yankees and a national voice on ESPN, NBC, and CBS.  He currently calls games for the MLB Network and is a seven-time Emmy winner.
