Joe Dumars Biography

Joe Dumars played 14 seasons in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons from 1985 to 1999 after a standout collegiate career at McNeese State in which he averaged 25.8 points per game as a senior and finished as the 11th leading scorer in NCAA history. After earning Southland Conference Player of the Year honors in 1985 he was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft. From 1985 to 1999 he earned six All-Star selections, was named to three All-NBA Teams, earned NBA All-Defensive Team honors five times, and led the Pistons to consecutive NBA Titles in 1989 and 1990 while also being named NBA Finals MVP in 1989. Off the court he was just as valuable to the Pistons franchise, staying active in the community and serving as a respected ambassador for their franchise. For his leadership on and off the court he was awarded the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1994 and the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 1996. In 2001 he was hired as the Pistons’ President of Basketball Operations, and has since been named the NBA Executive of the Year in 2003 and helped his team to another NBA Championship in 2004.
