John Drew Biography

A two-time All-Star, John Drew averaged over 20 points per game in his 11-year NBA career.  Drew played for both the Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz.  He is one of three Gardner-Webb University players to play in the NBA.  Drew’s career was shortened due to his cocaine addiction.  In 1984, it seemed like he would beat it and he won the NBA’s Comeback Player of the Year.  However, he was banned from the league in 1986 after multiple arrests.  Drew has gotten clean and works as a taxi driver in Houston, Texas.  He is originally from Vredenburgh, Alabama and went to J.F. Shields High School.  Drew still holds the Alabama High School Athletic Association single-season and career scoring records.
