John Groce Biography

John Groce is the head basketball coach at the University of Illinois.  In his first season with the Illini, they started out 12-0 and made the NCAA Tournament.  The team won the Maui Invitational towards the beginning of that 2012 season.  Groce got his first head coaching job at Ohio.  Overall, he went 85-56 with the Bobcats and made two NCAA Tournaments in four seasons.  At Ohio, Groce had a knack for big tournament upsets.  In 2010, the 14-seed Bobcats beat power Georgetown in the opening round.  Groce’s final Ohio team made it to the Sweet Sixteen as a 13-seed in 2012.  When you add his win over Colorado at Illinois, Groce is undefeated as a head coach in the NCAA Tournament opening round.  He gained a name as an assistant coach with Thad Matta at Butler, Xavier, and Ohio State.  Groce also coached under Herb Sendek at NC State.  His coaching career began at his alma mater, Taylor University.
