Larry Dierker Biography

Larry Dierker is a former Major League Baseball pitcher, manager and broadcaster. Dierker was signed by the Houston Colt .45a at the age of 17 where he made his major-league pitching debut on his 18th birthday. In 1969, Dierker became the Astros’ first 20-game winner when he compiled a 2.33 ERA, 20 complete games and 232 strikeouts over 305 innings. Dierker was selected to the National League All-Star team in 1969 and 1971. Dierker pitched his first no hitter against the Montreal Expos on July 9, 1976. The Astros honored Dierker on May 19, 2002 when the retired his No. 49 jersey.  He played one season with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1977. From 1979-96, Dierker served as the color commentator on the Astros’ radio and television broadcasts. After his playing career, Dierker became the manager of the Houston Astros from 1997-2001. He was named National League Manager of the Year in 1998.
