Laura Valaas Biography

Laura Valaas is a cross-country skier. Valaas grew up in a family that enjoyed many outdoor activities, one of which was cross-country skiing. During her childhood, she skied with the local junior program. It was not until Valaas was in high school that she started training more seriously. After high school, Valaas attended Whitman College where she could race in the competitive NCAA Division I Western Region. Valaas had a hard time with collegiate racing as she struggled and failed to break into the top 20 in the Regional races during her freshman year. In her sophomore year, Valaas wanted to qualify for NCAA’s, but she never finished in the top 20 which meant that she could not go to NCAA’s. As a junior, Valaas qualified for NCAA’s and she also earned All-American for both races at the 2005 NCAA’s. In her senior year, she won one of the Regional races and had a fourth place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. After graduating from college, Valaas had no plans except for a round-trip ticked to Peru. She applied for the CXC Ski Team because she thought she would be a good addition to the team.
