Laure Manaudou Biography

Laure Manaudou is a retired French Olympic, world and European champion swimmer. Manaudou participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics where she won the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle. Her win was France’s first gold medal ever in women’s swimming and the first gold medal won by a French athlete since 1952. She won the silver medal in the women’s 800-meter freestyle during the 2004 Summer Olympics. Manaudou also won the bronze medal in the women’s 100- meter backstroke; she became the second Frenchwoman to win three medals in a single Olympic Games. She is currently tied for third on the all-time list of French multiple female Winter or Summer Olympic medal winners. At the 2004 European Swimming Championships, Manaudou won three gold medals. She also won the women’s 400 m freestyle during the 2005 World Swimming Championships. Manaudou announced that she would be retiring from competitive swimming on September 19, 2009. She made her return to competitive swimming on July 14, 2011.
