Leslie O'Neal Biography

Leslie O’Neal was selected in the first round with the 8th overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the 1986 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State University. While playing defensive end at Oklahoma State he earned All-American honors in 1984 and 1985, All-Big Eight honors in three consecutive years from 1983 to 1985 and was named the 1985 Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year. In 1985 he finished his career with 351 tackles, which ranks him 5th all-time in Cowboys history. Upon signing a pro contract with the Chargers in 1986 he began a successful NFL career that featured him earning All-Rookie honors and the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award during his first season in the league. After nine seasons with the Chargers he played two seasons with the Rams and then finished his 13-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1999. During that span he earned six Pro Bowl selections, three NFL All-Pro nods, and recorded 132.5 sacks to go along with three interceptions at the defensive end position. In honor of his contribution to the franchise he was named to the 40th and 50th Anniversary All-Time Teams and inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame.
