Lovie Smith Biography

Lovie Smith had a long tenure as a head coach in the NFL and college football. Smith is best remembered for his 81-63 record over nine seasons as the Chicago Bears head coach. The Bears won three division titles and went to Super Bowl XLI. An 11-5 record in Smith’s second season was recognized with the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award. He also served as a head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the University of Illinois. Smith gained a name in the coaching world as defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams and linebackers coach with the Buccaneers. Smith went to Super Bowl XXXVI with the Rams and helped develop the Tampa 2 defense with the Bucs. Prior to that, he had been a college and high school assistant coach. As a player, Smith was a two-time All-American in college at Tulsa. At Big Sandy High School, his team won three straight state titles. Smith is a devout Christian and supporter of the American Diabetes Association.
