Maria Bueno Biography

Maria Bueno was a Brazilian tennis player who won seven Grand Slam singles titles.  Bueno won three times at Wimbledon and four times at the U.S. Open.  In addition, she captured 11 Grand Slam doubles titles and one mixed doubles championship.  There was four times in her career that Bueno ended the year ranked number one in the world.  She became the first non-North American woman to be victorious at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year.  Her best finishes at both the Australian and French Open came as a runner-up Margaret Court.  In 1959, Bueno was the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year and received a ticker-tape parade in her hometown of Sao Paulo.  Bueno was named to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1978 and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.  She has been a tennis analyst back in Brazil for SporTV.
