Mark Gottfried Biography

Mark Gottfried, former basketball player and current basketball head coach, has been guiding North Carolina State University to victories since April of 2011. Prior to his coaching career, Gottfried played one season at Oral Roberts on an athletic scholarship and three seasons with the Crimson Tide at Alabama. During his time at Alabama, Gottfried started 98 consecutive games and graduated with a degree in communications. He was selected in the 1987 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons but chose to take a different path and move to California to attend graduate school, instead. After attending graduate school at UCLA, Gottfried served as an assistant coach there for eight seasons. He also served as a head coach for three years (1995- 1998) at Murray State, and returned to his alma mater at Alabama in 1988 to continue being a Crimson Tide. After humbly resigning from that coaching position in 2009 due to unfortunate circumstances, Gottfried accepted the job as head coach at North Carolina State and has since been leading the Wolfpack. In January of 2013, Gottfried became the 14th coach in history to beat Duke, the #1 ranked team in the country with two separate schools, having already done so at Alabama. In addition, Gottfried has been awarded OVC and SEC Coach of the Year throughout his college coaching career.
