Pat Burrell Biography

Pat Burrell is a former MLB outfielder, most known for his time spent with the Philadelphia Phillies. Burrell was initially drafted by the Boston Red Sox out of high school, but he chose to attend the University of Miami, winning multiple All-American honors as well as the Golden Spikes Award in his final season for being the best NCAA baseball player. The Philadelphia Phillies selected Burrell with the first overall pick of the 1998 MLB Draft, signing him to a seven year deal. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Burrell made his MLB debut on May 23, 2000 against the Houston Astros, recording two hits and two RBI in a victory. Burrell would go on to be a mainstay in the Phillies lineup for nine season, and was an essential piece to the Phillies’ 2008 World Series run. Prior to the 2009 season, Burrell signed a two year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, setting career lows in his only season with the team. After being designated for assignment, Burrell cleared waivers and was signed to the San Francisco Giants, where he helped them win the 2010 World Series. Burrell was not signed by a team for the next season, and officially retired as a Phillie in 2012.
