Pat Fitzgerald Biography

Pat Fitzgerald is a former football player and head coach of the Northwestern University football team. In the 1990s, Fitzgerald was a star linebacker at Northwestern, earning multiple All-American honors, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, and the Chuck Bednarik Award. Fitzgerald led the Wildcats to their second-ever bowl appearance in 1996 when the Wildcats went to the Rose Bowl with a 10-1 record. After graduating, Fitzgerald joined the coaching staff at the University of Maryland as a linebacker coach. He would serve this role for Colorado, Idaho, and Northwestern in various seasons. In 2005, after five seasons with the Wildcats, Fitzgerald was named the head coach after current coach Randy Walker unexpectedly died. Once he took over, Fitzgerald would lead the Wildcats to multiple victories over top 10 teams, enjoying great success over his tenure.
