Phillip Fulmer Biography

Phillip Fulmer played guard on the University of Tennessee football team from 1968 to 1971 and helped them to a 30-5 record during that time, with an SEC Championship in 1969, a Sugar Bowl win in 1970 and a win in the Liberty Bowl in 1971. Upon earning his degree he became a student coach for the Volunteers in 1972. After two seasons at his alma mater he headed to Wichita State University and served as the offensive line and linebackers coach from 1974 to 1978. In 1979 he served as the offensive line coach at Vanderbilt, and then returned to Tennessee for good. From 1980 to 1988 he served as the offensive line coach for the Volunteers until being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1989. In 1992 he landed the head-coaching job at Tennessee and went on to lead them to a 152-52 record over the next 16 seasons with six SEC East Division titles, two SEC Championships and a National Championship in 1998. Coach Fulmer’s career in coaching was honored in 2012 with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
