Rayna Dubose Biography

Rayna Dubose has certainly won in the game of life. After being highly recruited and granted a full athletic scholarship to play basketball for Virginia Tech in 2001, Rayna was struck down by the bacterial disease known as meningococcal meningitis. The disease that can affect the brain and spinal cord, led to 96 days in the UVA Medical Center for Rayna with collapsed organs, non-functioning kidneys, liver problems and worst of all, a lack of blood circulation to her extremities. As she put it, she was a vegetable fighting for her life. All four of her limbs had to be amputated, and her career in playing basketball was over. She has received the Most Courageous Award at the Men’s Basketball Final Four as well as the Wilma Rudolph Award. She was also given the 2009 National Ethnic Coalition Organization Congressional Ellis Island Medal of Honor award. She hopes to spread her story and motivate others to persevere through whatever life throws their way just like she had to.
