Russ Pennell Biography

Russ Pennell was a point guard for the University of Arkansas and later the University of Central Arkansas during his college days. Following his graduation in 1984, Pennell realized that he didn’t want to leave the game he loved so he began a career in coaching. He first volunteered to coach at Pittsburgh State before being given his first job with Oklahoma State as an assistant coach. He served in this role until 2008 for several different schools until he landed a job at the University of Arizona. After serving as an assistant for several months, Pennell was named as the interim head coach in October of 2008. Pennell helped turn the Wildcats’ season around, leading them to their 25th straight postseason appearance where he took them on a surprise run to the Sweet 16. In 2013 Pennell served a brief stint as the interim coach for the Phoenix Mercury where he took the team to the Western Conference Finals, following which he announced he would not return in hopes to return to the college game. Before the 2014 season, Pennell was announced the new head coach for his alma mater, Central Arkansas.
