Steve Atwater Biography

Steve Atwater, drafted in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft out of the University of Arkansas, had a very profound professional career. Having been moved from quarterback to safety in college, he spent most of his professional career playing free safety for the Denver Broncos. Atwater’s statistics were phenomenal. Throughout his time in the NFL, he was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, which was the second most in franchise history. Early on in his career, Atwater made a name for himself by teaming with fellow Broncos safety Dennis Smith to form one of the best tag-teams known of the generation. He earned two Super Bowl rings and had one of his best performances in Super Bowl XXXII, carrying out six solo tackles, one sac, two passes defensed and a forced fumble. Denver’s win in the Super Bowl XXXIII game was Atwater’s final game with the Broncos, as he moved on to the Jets for his next and final season with the NFL. After walking away from the sport in 1999, Atwater made a life for himself in Atlanta, Georgia with a family of four children and a real-estate job. To this day, Atwater still holds the University of Arkansas’ school record of the most interceptions in a season, fourteen and has left a strong, lasting impression in the minds of everyone who watched him play over the years.
