Thad Matta Biography

Thad Matta is a former collegiate basketball player head coach at Ohio State University. Matta played basketball at Southern Illinois University in the 1985 season, transferring to Butler University to play his last three seasons. After graduating from Butler, Matta would be hired as an assistant coach at Indiana State, Butler, Miami of Ohio, and Western Carolina until his hiring as the head coach of his Alma Mater Butler in 2000. Matta would lead Butler in the right direction during his only season at the helm, going 24-8 with an NCAA tournament bid. He would leave Butler for Xavier University, leading the Musketeers to three straight 26 win seasons and three NCAA tournament berths. In 2004, Matta was named the head coach at Ohio State. He compiled a 337-123 record over 13 seasons, good enough to make him the winningest coach in school history. Matta’s most successful season was 2006, in which his Buckeyes made it all the way to the national championship, eventually losing to the University of Florida. Under Matta's watch, Ohio State made nine trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the Big Ten regular-season title five times.
