Chris Kluwe Biography

Chris Kluwe is a controversial, retired professional football player that played in the NFL from 2005-2013. Before his tenure in the NFL, Kluwe, a high school All-American, attended the University of California, Los Angeles as a punter for the Bruins. After 4 years at UCLA where he compiled over 6,600 punting yards (averaging 43.0 yards per punt), Kluwe was signed as an undrafted free agent to the Seattle Seahawks but was signed to the Minnesota Vikings before the ’05 season began. Kluwe spent 7 seasons with the Vikings as one of the top punters in the League, producing 11 individual records at the punting position for the Viking’s franchise. However, his on-field success was often over shadowed by his off-field viewpoints which cause constant tension between him and the Viking’s owners. Kluwe is an activist for gay and lesbian rights and is not shy to state his opinions. He was controversially released by the Vikings in 2013 and has since threatened to sue the team if they didn’t punish a special teams coach who had offended Kluwe for his viewpoints.
