Chris Witty Biography

Christine “Chris” Witty competed in a total of six Olympic Games from 1994 – 2006 in both speed skating and indoor track cycling. Only ever placing fifth and sixth in track cycling, Witty found her niche on the skating track. In the ’98 Games in Nagano, Witty finally medaled bringing home a silver and a bronze in the women’s 1,000 meters and 1,500 meters respectively. Four years later on home turf in Salt Lake City, she finally won the gold she had been waiting for in the women’s 1,000 meter, setting the new World Record in the process. In 2006 Witty was chosen by her teammates to carry in the American flag at the opening ceremony for the ’06 Games in Turin. Shortly before the games, she announced that she had been abused by a neighbor for the majority of her childhood. Witty now speaks around the Country about her story and her amazing ability to go from abuse to Olympic glory.
