Clay Matthews III Biography

Coming from a family that breeds football players, Clay Matthews III is son and grandson of former NFL players Clay Jr. and Clay Sr.; his brother Casey is also in the NFL. The shockingly once undersized Matthews followed in his dad’s footsteps by attending the University of Southern California where he walked on to the football team. After two years, Matthews earned an athletic scholarship and increased playing time, mostly as a special teams stand out. By his senior season, Pete Carroll noticed drastic improvement in Matthews’ physical capabilities and gave him playing time in a hybrid linebacker role. Impressing in his senior year and at the NFL Scouting Combine, Matthews was drafted in 2009 by the Green Bay Packers. During his ten years with the Packers, he was selected to six Pro Bowls and made three All-Pro teams. In his second NFL season, 2010, Matthews helped lead the Packers to a Super Bowl victory and set a team record for sacks in a postseason with 3.5. He signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.
