Craig Breslow Biography

Craig Breslow is a former major league pitcher and the current Chief Baseball Officer for the Boston Red Sox. During his playing days, he was given the nickname “smartest man in baseball” by a Wall Street Journal reporter and by a Minneapolis Star Tribune writer. Breslow was also named the smartest athlete in 2010 on The Sporting News top 20 list. 

Breslow was born in 1980 in New Haven, Connecticut, and went on to attend Yale University. At Yale, he served as the Ivy League team’s baseball captain. After college, Breslow spent some time with the Milwaukee Brewers organization and the Northeast League until he debuted professionally with the San Diego Padres in 2005. He has since served as a relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks and again with the Boston Red Sox.

After retiring, Breslow joined the front office of the Chicago Cubs under his old general manager in Boston, Theo Epstein. After serving in a variety of rolls with the Cubs from 2019-23, he was hired as Chief Baseball Officer for the Red Sox.
