D. Wayne Lukas Biography

D. Wayne Lukas, officially known as Darrell Wayne Lukas, is most commonly known as a well-distinguished American horse trainer. Lukas, born in 1935 and raised on a small farm in Wisconsin, grew up with horses all his life. He taught high school and coached basketball for nine years after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but was never able to ignore his extreme passion for horses. As a result, he quit teaching and began training horses in 1968. Since, he has won Breeder’s Cup races a record total of 20 times, including four Kentucky Derby wins and many others. He has received a handful of prestigious awards for his extraordinary talent in training, including four years of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer, four years of the U.S. Champion Trainer by wins awards, seven years of the U.S. Leading stakes-winner trainer awards, the John W. Galbreath Equine Award, and an outstanding thirteen-time recipient of the U.S. Champion Trainer by earnings award between 1983 and 1997. Lukas has achieved an unbelievable 739 career wins with his quarter horses and at 79 years old, is widely considered to be one of the best horse trainers of his time. He was most recently recognized for his talent in 2013 with the Eclipse Award of Merit.
