Dave Parker Biography

Dave Parker played 19 seasons in the major leagues as a right fielder and designated hitter with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, California Angels and Toronto Blue Jays from 1973 to 1991.  Parker was a revolutionary in the world of professional athletics, as he was the first athlete to earn an average of one million dollars a year, having signed a five-year, $5 million contract with the Pirates in 1979.  During his career he won two National League batting titles in 1977 and 1978, was named the NL MVP in 1978, earned three consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1977 to 1979, three Silver Slugger Awards in 1985, 1986 and 1990 and was named a seven-time All-Star.  In 1979 he helped the Pirates to a World Series title and went on to win a second World Series ring with the Oakland Athletics in 1989.  Parker retired in 1991 with a career batting average of .290, 2,712 career hits, 339 homeruns and 1,493 career RBI.  After his retirement he served as the first base coach for the Anaheim Angels, hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and special hitting instructor for the Pirates.  He also became a successful businessman, owning and operating several Popeye’s Chicken franchises in Cincinnati for over 25 years.  Parker was inducted into the Cincinnati Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
