Denis Potvin Biography

Denis Potvin played 16 seasons in the NHL for the New York Islanders and helped his team to four Stanley Cup wins while earning three James Norris Memorial Trophies as the leagues top defenseman.  Potvin joined the Islanders as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft after a stellar amateur career with the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League.  During 16 seasons with the Islanders he scored 310 goals and added another 710 assists for a total of 1,052 points in 1060 career games.  He also tallied 1,356 penalty minutes as one of the league’s top enforcers.  In the playoffs he was just as good, scoring 56 goals and posting 108 assists in 185 games.  Potvin was the first defenseman in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points and retired as the NHL leader in career playoff goals, assists and points for defenseman.  In 1992 the Islanders retired his No. 5 jersey one year after he took his rightful place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.  After retiring from the NHL he became a broadcaster for Sportsnet and is currently the color commentator for the Florida Panthers.
