Devon White Biography

Devon White, known as “Devo”, played 17 years in the big leagues and is currently the outfield coordinator for the Chicago White Sox.  He began his major league career at age 22 with the California Angels in 1985 and played on the west coast for six seasons.  In 1991 he headed north to the Toronto and helped the Blue Jays to two World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.  In 1996 he migrated south to Florida and won another World Series ring in 1997.  He’d go on to play for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers before ending his career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2001.  On the field he was known for his defensive prowess, earning seven Gold Glove Awards and three All-Star selections.  Although he was born Devon Whyte, his name was changed to White when he migrated from Kingston, Jamaica to the United States at age nine.  The name change was a result of faulty paperwork when he arrived stateside, and he and his family just went with it.  In 2003 he changed his legal name back to Whyte, but he still signs autographs as Devon White.  As an article once stated however, White or Whyte, he’s still Devo.
