J.J. Watt Biography

While he now plays for the Arizona Cardinals, J.J. Watt is quite simply the best defensive player in Houston Texans history. The Texans selected Watt in the 1st round as the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Watt started in all 16 games for the Texans and he was named Texans Team Rookie of the Year, USA Today All-Joe Team and Pro-Football Weekly/PWFA All-Rookie Team. Watt had one of the best seasons for a defensive player in NFL history during the 2012 season, winning the first of three NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards. While in Houston, he was also a five-time first-team All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL sacks leader. Watt was unquestioned as a leader, suiting up in the postseason for the franchise five times. He is also regarded for his work off the field, as evidenced by being named the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year and Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. 

Watt originally wanted to play hockey and was devoted to the sport from the time he was four years old until he was thirteen. He also played football and became passionate about it when he was in the 5th grade. Watt attended the Central Michigan University before he attended the University of Wisconsin. While at Wisconsin, Watt was redshirted in 2008 and he was named Wisconsin’s Scout Team Player of the Year.
