Joey Cheek Biography

Joey Cheek is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in speed skating. Cheek had his first triumph at the Olympics in 2002, where he won the 1000 meters. In the lead-up to the 2006 Games, he became a world champion for the first time in the sprint competition. Cheek won a gold and a silver at the 2006 Olympics in the 500 m and 1000 m respectively. Due to his strong performance in Turin, he was chosen by his teammates to carry the U.S. flag at the Closing Ceremonies. Following Cheek's Olympic career, he graduated from Princeton University. He also became an influential humanitarian, co-founding an organization called Team Darfur. Cheek was named one of Time's most influential people and won the inaugural Heisman Humanitarian Award. He is a member of the U.S. Speedskating Hall of Fame, International Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
