Joey Crawford Biography

Joey Crawford served as an NBA referee from 1977-2016. Crawford comes from a decorated family of officials, with his father having served as an umpire in Major League Baseball from 1956 to 1975 and his brother joining him in the big leagues from 1976 to 2010. Crawford got his start in basketball officiating in 1970 at the high school level and then moved to the Continental Basketball Association in 1974. After three years in the CBA he was hired as a referee in the NBA in 1977. During his career, he developed a solid reputation as a strict and reliable referee during regular season and postseason games. In 2005 he reached the 2,000 game milestone and was one of the longest-tenured NBA referees in history.
