John Naber is the pride of Evanston, Illinois. After a stellar junior and prep career in the pool he headed off to swim at the University of Southern California. While competing for the Trojans he led his team to four consecutive NCAA National Championships, and went on to earn his degree in psychology from USC in 1997. Naber made his international debut in 1973 at the World Championships and won a bronze medal in the 200-meter backstroke. Three years later he landed a spot on the USA Olympic team and won four gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke, 200- meter backstroke, 4x200-meter freestyle and 4x100-meter medley. He also added a silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle. During those games he also set world records in the 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter backstroke. For his accomplishments he was awarded the 1977 James E. Sullivan Award as the top American amateur athlete and inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1982.
