Joop Zoetemelk Biography

Joop Zoetemelk was one of the top bicycle road racers in the world for over 17 years from 1970 to 1987. During his career he raced for seven different international teams including, Mars-Flandria, Gitane-Frigercreme, Gan-Mercier, TI-Raleigh, CoopMercier, Kwantum and Superconfex. Prior to his career he worked as a carpenter and competed in speed skating before hopping on the bike and racing his way into history. During the 1968 Summer Olympic Games he raced to a Gold Medal in the 100 km Team Time-Trial, making him a hero in his native Netherlands. Throughout his professional career he raced in some of the most notable international races in the world, including the Tour de France, Paris-Tours, Tour du Haut Var and Circuit de Lorraine. In 1971 he won the Dutch Road Race Championship and went on to win the 1985 World Road Race Championship, and 1980 Tour de France. During his career he also posted numerous runner-up finishes at the Tour de France in 1976 and 1982. His time on the bicycle brought him global notoriety and respect beyond words.
