Jordan Samuels-Thomas Biography

Jordan Samuels-Thomas is on track to become just the third black on-ice official in NHL history. Samuels-Thomas is currently officiating in the AHL, where he is also the only full-time person of color making calls on the ice. He got a taste of NHL action prior to the 2021-22 season by working six preseason games. Prior to his arrival, the last black man to referee an NHL game was Jay Sharrers in 2004. Before focusing on becoming an official, Samuels-Thomas had a lengthy professional hockey career in the AHL and ECHL. He was originally a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2009 NHL Draft.
