Kara Lawson Biography

Kara Lawson joined the WNBA as a member of the Sacramento Monarchs in 2003. Prior to that she starred at the University of Tennessee, where she earned the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the best senior player under 5 foot 8 inches tall. After earning her degree in finance from Tennessee in 2003 she was selected with the 5th overall selection by the Detroit Shock in the first round of the 2003 WNBA Draft. Immediately after being drafted she was traded to the Monarchs and began a successful pro basketball career. In 2005 she helped the Monarchs to a WNBA Championship and earned her first All-Star selection in 2007. Since that time she has earned the Dawn Staley Community Assist Award in 2013 and the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award in 2009 and 2012. She has also represented the United States on the national team. In 2001 she was a member of the USA team that won gold at the World University Games and went on to help the USA to a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. Lawson played six seasons in Sacramento before playing three seasons with the Connecticut Sun. In 2007, she became the first woman to work as a nationwide broadcaster when she joined the ESPN broadcasting crew as an NBA analyst. Lawson retired from the WNBA in 2015 and became the lead TV analyst for the Washington Wizards two years later. In 2019, she was hired as a Boston Celtics assistant coach and took over as head coach of the Duke's women's basketball team a year later.
