Mike Johnston Biography

Mike Johnston is the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  In his first year, the Penguins made the playoffs and went 43-27-12 overall.  Prior to arriving in the Steel City, Johnston was the head coach of the Vancouver Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League from 2008-2014.  With a record of 231-114-10-10, he has the second most wins of any coach in Winterhawks history.  Johnston also has assistant coaching stints with the Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings on his resume.  He became a coach and general manager of the Canadian national team in 1994 and served as the squad's head coach for one season in 1998.  His coaching career began on the collegiate level, first for Augustana University College and then for the University of Calgary.  Johnston was also the head coach at the University of New Brunswick for five seasons.
