Olga Korbut Biography

Olga Korbut is a former gymnast who has won four gold medals and two silver medals in the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics. Korbut began her training at eight years old and at the age of nine; she entered a Belarusian sports school. In 1969, Korbut competed in her first competition, the 1969 USSR Championships, where she finished fifth. During the 1972 Sumer Olympics, Korbut’s acrobatics and gymnastics brought her much fame. At the Olympics, Korbut was a favorite for the all-around after her dynamic performance in the team competition. Korbut took home the gold in team, balance beam, and floor exercise. She also took home the silver in the uneven bars. Korbut is most famous for her uneven bars and balance beam routines. Korbut won the gold in team and an individual silver on the balance beam, during the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1977, Korbut retired from gymnastic competition and she became a teacher.
