Paul MacLean Biography

Paul MacLean is an NHL head coach, currently serving as head coach of the Ottawa Senators. Before coaching, MacLean was a successful player in the NHL, originally being drafted by the St. Louis Blues, then traded to the Winnipeg Jets. MacLean would go on to score 36 goals his rookie season, enjoying great success with the team up until being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 1988. After one season in Detroit, MacLean would return to the Blues to finish his career, scoring a total of 673 points in 719 games. Following his retirement from playing, MacLean became a head coach of a minor league team, then served as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. After bouncing back and forth from the IHL, UHL, and NHL as an assistant coach, MacLean was hired as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators in 2011, winning the coach of the year award in 2012, and signing a three year contract extension in 2014 to reward him for his success.
