Pearl Washington Biography

Pearl Washington is a retired basketball player, known for his time at Syracuse University. Washington was considered the top recruit coming out of high school, and he committed to Syracuse to play under legendary coach Jim Boeheim. Washington took the NCAA by storm in 1983 during his freshman season, leading the Orange with 14.4 points per game. It was during his freshman year that he wowed fans with the move he called the “Shake and Bake,” where he would juke out the defender and lay the ball up. Washington would be even better his sophomore season, increasing his points per game to 15.4, while also leading the Orange back to the NCAA tournament, and being named a consensus All-American During his third and final season at Syracuse, Washington averaged a career high 17.3 points, as he and the Orange won their second Big East regular season championship. Following his storied career at Syracuse, Washington was drafted in the first round of the 1986 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets, but could never catch on in the NBA, eventually retiring after a stint with the Miami Heat and a few years in the CBA.
