Rod Woodson Biography

Rod Woodson went to Purdue University to study electrical engineering and to play football for the Boilermakers. After four years, the defensive back and return specialist had been named a two-time All-American and often saw time on the offensive side of the ball as a running back and receiver. Upon graduation from Purdue, Woodson was drafted 10th overall in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. For the first 9 seasons of his career, Woodson played cornerback and returned punts for the Steelers, making a name for himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the game. The Steeler’s held a sign in their stadium that read “Rod is God” until contract disputes with the team forced Woodson into free agency following the ’96 season. Woodson went on to play for the San Francisco 49ers, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Oakland Raiders, appearing in 3 Super Bowls including a win with the Ravens in XXXV. Woodson retired in 2003 as an 11-time Pro Bowler, is 2nd all-time in interception return yards, and leads the league in most interceptions returned for a touchdown in an NFL career with 12.
