Shawn Green Biography

Shawn Green was one of the players of his era in baseball. Green was a two-time All-Star, collected over 100 RBI four times, and hit over 40 home runs three times. Green was originally a first-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1991 MLB Draft. He made his big league debut in 1993 and played sparingly over the next two seasons before getting his breakout in 1995. That year, Green hit .288 and belted 15 home runs in 97 games, while also setting Blue Jays rookie records for doubles, extra-base hits, and slugging percentage. In 1998, he became the first 30-30 player in Toronto and only the tenth in MLB history to go over 35 homers and 35 stolen bases. The 1999 season saw Green pick up a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award. 

In 2000, Green was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and a year later set a new team record with 49 home runs. He continued to be highly productive for the Dodgers until being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005. Green played two seasons with the Diamondbacks and two with the New York Mets before retiring in 2008. 

Green was also well-known throughout his career due to his close association with his Jewish heritage. He drew headlines in 2002 when he broke a 415 consecutive games played streak to sit out in observance of Yom Kippur. Green is a member of several Halls of Fame, including the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
