Stacy Dragila Biography

Stacy Dragila is an Olympic gold medal-winning pole vaulter. As a child, Dragila followed her brother into rodeo, and she participated in gymnastics, but she had to give the sport up due to asthma. While in high school, Dragila played volleyball, ran track as a sprinter, hurdler and jumper. Dragila attended Yuba College where she continued to work on hurdles and eventually made it to the heptathlon. Her primary focus was to earn a track scholarship to a 4-year school. Dragila’s goal came true when Dave Nielsen offered her a heptathlete scholarship to Idaho State University. Nielsen was a former pole-vaulter and convinced Dragila to try the pole-vault. At the time, pole-vaulting was not an official event for women. She originally showed no aptitude for the event, but after being coached, she got the hang of it. Dragila has won 4 gold medals and one silver medals in multiple competitions; one of which was the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
