Steve Prohm Biography

Steve Prohm is the head coach of the Murray State men's basketball program and is in his second stint at the school. Prohm began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant to head coach Bill Kennedy at Centenary College. Moving on with Kennedy to Southeastern Louisiana University, Prohm spent six consecutive seasons as an assistant there. After leaving in 2005 to serve as an assistant coach for Tulane University for one season, Prohm found himself back with Kennedy. He rejoined Kennedy’s coaching staff, this time at Murray State University, and helped lead the team in 2010 to an NCAA Tournament win, only their second in school history. 

After five years as Kennedy’s assistant at Murray State, Prohm was named Murray State’s 15th head coach in 2011. He did remarkable things for the team, being noted for them in 2012 with earning multiple awards, including OVC Coach of the Year, District-IV Coach of the Year, Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year, and NABC District 19 Coach of the Year all within one year. Overall, he went 104-29 in four seasons heading the Racers before taking the top job at Iowa State. Prohm led the Cyclones to three NCAA Tournament appearances in six seasons. He returned to Murray State after a year out of coaching in 2022.
