Steve Waugh Biography

Steve Waugh, nicknamed “Tucker”, has been a member of the Australian cricket team since 1985. Waugh captained the Australian Test cricket team for five years, from 1999 to 2004, holding the title as the most capped (a European sport term referring to the most international appearances) Test cricket player in history, with 168 appearances, for six years. A fraternal twin and a beloved public figure to many, Waugh did more than shine in the game of cricket. Waugh was dedicated to his philanthropic work, as well, earning him the title of Australian of the Year in 2004. Career highlights include being one of only 11 players to have scored over 10,000 Test runs, victory of the 1999 Cricket World Cup, and leading Australia to fifteen of their record sixteen consecutive Test wins. Waugh’s notable contributions to the sport did not go unnoticed, as he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2010. Waugh was ranked as the world’s leading Test batsman for several years of his career. Steven Waugh has widely earned the reputation as one of the best cricket players of his generation, surpassing that of Australian batsman Don Bradman.
