Ted Leonsis is an investor that is most famous for owning the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. Leonsis also owns the Verizon Center in downtown Washington D.C., which is home to all three of his sports teams. After graduating from Georgetown University in 1977, Leonsis would go on to create Redgate Communications in 1987. The success of Redgate led to AOL purchasing the company in 1994,leaving Leonsis as senior executive of AOL until 2006. This success all led to him creating Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, where Leonsis serves as owner, founder, chairman, and CEO.
