Ex-Boxing Champ Evander Holyfield Speaks to Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama

Last Tuesday, former World Heavyweight Champion and Alabama native Evander Holyfield went back to his roots to deliver an impactful message.  Holyfield was in Mobile to speak at the Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama Youth of the Year Luncheon.

He told the 200 students in the audience to never quit and also reminisced about taking boxing lessons at the Boys & Girls Club in Atlanta.  The organization also auctioned off a pair of Holyfield signed gloves that went for $1,800.

Over a 27-year professional career, he went 44-10-2.  No one else in boxing history has ever been a four-time World Heavyweight Champion.

Holyfield has impressive career victories over fighters like George Foreman, Buster Douglas, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, and Mike Tyson.  Early in his career, he became the Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion before moving up to heavyweight in 1988.

Holyfield’s 1984 bronze medal win at the 1984 Olympics was what first gave him a household name.  He originally began boxing at the age of seven in Atlanta.
