Legendary Coach to Deliver Keynote at Annual Community Event
The South Dakota Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner is held annually in Sioux Falls to honor its first responders, and courageous police officers, and to raise funds for several children’s charities. What began as a small gathering in 1982 by former police officer and lawmaker Gene Abdallah has grown into an annual event that draws state dignitaries and local business leaders.
For the event’s 45th edition, they have invited Pro Football Hall of Fame coaching legend Tony Dungy as the keynote headliner to host this year’s dinner on October 28 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Dungy is an American sports pioneer who played as a safety in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants in the late 1970s before transitioning to coaching. He became the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl when he led the Indianapolis Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears.
“Coach Dungy, in addition to his incredible coaching record, is known nationwide as a very inspirational motivational speaker,” Abdallah said.

A devout Christian, Dungy emphasizes character, faith, and community service. After retiring from coaching in 2009, he became a popular NFL studio analyst for NBC’s “Football Night in America” and an author of books on leadership and life lessons. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
The mission of this event aligns with Dungy’s life's work, as he and his wife, Lauren, have raised several children and continue philanthropic work through their All Pro Dad and other family-focused initiatives.
Bringing in a speaker of Coach Dungy's caliber is commonplace for this event, with past headliners including actor William Shatner and former White House czar Tom Homan. Other event programming included a bicycle handout of refurbished bikes from the local community, culminating with the William J. Janklow Award, bestowed upon an outstanding law enforcement officer.
“We’ve got 2,000 people who now attend this event. To my knowledge, it’s the largest event of its kind in the nation,” said event co-chair Scott Abdallah. “We have now raised millions of dollars to fund local children’s charities, all given in the name of law enforcement to those charities. So it’s really evolved over 45 years.”
