Beloved Olympic Skating Phenom Brings His “Gold Medalist Mindset” to Southern California Attorneys
Olympic gold medalist Apolo Ohno delivered the keynote at the 65th Annual Association of Southern California Defense Counsel's Seminar, sharing insights on momentum, leadership, and growth during two days of focused discussions on the evolving challenges for litigators.
Ohno began skating at age 14 and quickly rose to dominance. He competed in four Olympic Games (2002–2014), winning eight medals, including two gold, making him the most decorated American Winter Olympian at the time. His breakthrough came at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, where he won gold in the 1500m and became a national star known for his explosive speed, tactical racing, and charismatic personality.
Reflecting on both the setbacks and triumphs that defined his journey to Olympic success, Ohno shared with the audience that true high performance hinges on how individuals respond when circumstances don’t unfold as planned.
"You prepare a lifetime for something," Ohno said, "and it may or may not go your way, but your perception of that result and how you pick yourself back up is within your control."
Throughout his keynote, Ohno delved into the idea of "flow", essentially that heightened mental state when focus intensifies, and performance becomes almost second nature, especially under pressure. Drawing parallels to the high-stakes moments attorneys and judges face in the courtroom, he emphasized that peak performance isn’t something you can force.

"When you say, 'I'm going to get into flow, it's nowhere to be found," Ohno said. "You have to do all the things necessary, all the preparation, leave nothing unturned, and then flow seems to come to you."
He also warned against the modern-day desire for instant results, reminding the audience that genuine mastery is still built on years of disciplined effort.
"We have to play to win," Ohno said, "because that is what demands the best of ourselves."
As he wrapped up, Ohno shifted to a broader message about purpose, perspective, and the power of personal choice. He explained that his current mission extends beyond competition; he’s now focused on empowering high-performing professionals to rediscover their inner strength and sense of agency.
"My purpose and passion today," Ohno said, "is to be a vessel of reminder, to help guide folks who are high performers like yourself of their own inner power."
Addressing the audience directly, Ohno emphasized the importance of character and perseverance, especially in challenging times.
"What you do, how you conduct yourself, how you stick with it when it's really hard," he said, "is what we live and need as human beings."
After retiring, he transitioned into television, appearing on “Dancing with the Stars,” providing commentary, pursuing business ventures, and engaging in motivational speaking. He remains an icon for his work ethic, mental toughness, and role in popularizing short-track skating in America.
His presentation closed with a mantra written inside his racing suit throughout his Olympic career: "One world. One life. One chance. Your choice."
