Marcus Mariota Inks Endorsement Deal with Nike

The Marcus Mariota hype machine is starting to ramp up in advance of the start of the NFL Draft in April 30th.  Leave it to University of Oregon partner Nike to prominently feature the former Ducks star quarterback in an ad leading up to the draft.

Nike is welcoming Mariota to the brand with a commercial that shows his preparation.  He says in the quick spot, “I’m a competitor. I want to go out there and lay it all out for my team.  Just go out there and try to win.”

Mariota is currently vying to be the number one overall pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  This past season, he was the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and led Oregon to the national championship against Ohio State.

His banner 2014 season also fetched him the Davey O’Brien, Walter Camp, and Maxwell Awards.  Mariota threw for 4,121 yards and 40 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

As a three-year Oregon starter, he set school records for passing yards, touchdowns, and total offense.  Mariota also set the Pac-12 career and single-season record for total touchdowns.

With the strong partnership Nike foster Phil Knight has fostered over the years with his alma mater, it is no surprise that Mariota is the next big-time athlete to join the brand.  Considering they already hold the NFL’s apparel deal through 2019, it is important that the leading sports good brand locks up an increasing number of the league’s stars to increase brand symmetry.
