About Alana Nichols
Alana Nichols is an American Paralympic athlete renowned for being the first U.S. woman to win gold medals in both Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. A snowboarding accident at 17 left her paralyzed from the waist down after a backflip attempt broke her T10/11 vertebrae. Despite this, Nichols excelled in adaptive sports, winning gold in wheelchair basketball at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and two golds (downhill, giant slalom), a silver (super-G), and a bronze (super combined) in alpine skiing at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics. She competed in five Paralympics (2008â2016), earning six medals across wheelchair basketball, alpine skiing, and paracanoe. Nichols also advocates for adaptive sports, notably surfing, aiming for its Paralympic inclusion. A former Colorado Sportswoman of the Year, sheâs a motivational speaker and mother, inspiring resilience in adaptive athletics.
