About Billy Mills
Billy Mills did something that no man from the Western Hemisphere has ever done. In 1964, Mills won the 10,000-meter race at the Olympics in Tokyo. His gold medal triumph would set him up for a lifetime of success. Mills is a member of the National Track and Field and U.S. Olympic Halls of Fame. He founded Running Strong for American Indian Youth to benefit various Native American initiatives. Mills is also a National Spokesperson for Christian Relief Services, a group he has helped raise over $500 million. President Barack Obama awarded him the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal. Mills achieved all this success despite growing up poor on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was also orphaned at the age of 12, but found a way to track excellence at the University of Kansas. Mills was a three-time All-American in cross-country for the Jayhawks. Following his graduation, he entered the Marine Corps and was still enlisted when he captured gold in 1964.
